PIPEDA stands for Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act. It is a federal law that regulates how private-sector organizations collect, use and disclose personal information in the course of commercial business. PIPEDA applies to all businesses that are involved in commercial activities, except those in provinces that have their own privacy laws (British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec, and soon to be Manitoba).
The act sets out guidelines on how to handle personal information and provides individuals with a right to access and request correction of their personal information held by an organization.
As a business owner, it's important to understand your legal obligations under PIPEDA and ensure that you are compliant with the act's regulations.
